The new Linwood Barclay novel is another thriller getting a ton of praise. Sometimes I agree with the hoopla, other times I do not. So far, at around page fifty, Elevator Pitch is pretty good. Competent writing, interesting characters, a novel premise. I'm not super-impressed yet, the way I was with Ill Will, but I'll definitely keep reading. Hopefully it will pick up.

I'm around page one hundred. The plot of Elevator Pitch is riveting, but the characters are falling a little bit flat. Barclay is clearly a pro at the game and he knows how to weave a story. But so far the story feels a bit...soulless. I will finish it, and hopefully I will be impressed enough to read him again.

I loved it. Barclay's characters are never really drawn that well, but his plotting is what keeps me reading. I've enjoyed all his books.

OK, I am really enjoying it now. So, John, would you consider Elevator Pitch to be one of Barclay's best books? What would you recommend as a followup read for me?

I think this one is certainly one of his better ones. My own favorite is the Promise Falls trilogy, which starts with Broken Promise.

I'm almost finished. I have really been up and down with this one. Barclay can tell a story, and I love the depictions of the city dealing with the elevator crisis. The human elements are pretty over-the-top and heavy-handed. I do believe that Elevator Pitch could make a successful movie. It seems tailor made for the visual medium.

I recently finished my first Barclay, No Time for Goodbye, and was really disappointed. The characters were flat and unlikeable, the plot ho-hum and predictable. Is this one an outlier? Should I try a different title of his?

I just reviewed Elevator Pitch for Horror Drive-In. I tried to link it here, but it wasn't working right. I had very mixed feelings about it.
