Both Ketchum's THE BOX, ABED by Massie and The Night They Missed the Horror show by Lansdale all make my list. It's tough for me to remember short stories, but I'd definitely add these three also:
Returns, Jack Ketchum Consolation, Gary Braunbeck Haceldama, Gary Braunbeck
Novellas:
The Turtle Boy, Kealan Patrick Burke Exorcist Road, Jonathan Janz The Ocean at the End of the Lane, Neil Gaiman Odd Man Out, James Newman Fender Lizards, Joe Lansdale Out Behind the Barn, Lutzke/Boden Wallflower, Chad Lutzke

haha. No Mark, it is not. And while you're at it, neither is The Ocean at the End of the Lane. You know I gotta slide those in because of the readers that read only horror, or will only be excited about a read because it's horror. By the time they've figured out that I've lied to them, it's too late because they're already sucked into the story Also, stop being annoying please Jason

Just so you know, I added all of your dumb sci-fi novels to my TBR list, so I can complain to you about them after I read em

This is a response I sent to PS Publishing last winter when they asked for list of favorite short stories:
Read the interesting bit in the last newsletter about the best short stories of all time and your request for lists from readers.
So here is my list. Certainly not a best-of list, but those stories that have stuck with me over the last 30 years or so. A few old ones, but most are more recently written. I planned on a quick list of 10, which quickly grew to 20, and I finally capped it at 30.
A few self-imposed rules on coming up with the list: 1. Only one story per author 2. Short stories only, tried to stay away from novella length works (novellas would be a whole different list) 3. Only included what I could remember off the top of my head (i.e., didn't check any book or internet references)
Far Below by Fred Barbour The Last Will & Testament of Jacqueline Ess by Clive Barker Zero Hour by Ray Bradbury Blood Brothers by Richard Chizmar Meeting with Medusa by Arthur C. Clark Feeders & Eaters by Neil Gaiman The Brasher Girl by Ed Gorman Ghost Trap by Rick Hautala 20th Century Ghosts by Joe Hill The Devil's Smile by Glen Hirshberg Bunnies in August by Brian Keene Forever by Jack Ketchum The Reach by Stephen King The Night They Missed the Horror Show by Joe Lansdale Exploration Team by Murray Leinster Pickman's Model by HP Lovecraft Sandkings by George RR Martin Brazo de Dios by Elizabeth Massie Nightmare at 20,000 Feet by Richard Matheson The Yard by William Nolan Lydia, Leaving by Philip Nutman The Autopsy by Michael Shea Dying in Bangkok by Dan Simmons Home & Hearth by Angela Slatter The Ocean & All Its Devices by William B. Spencer The Innsmouth Heritage by Brian Stableford Dracula's Guest by Bram Stoker The Church on the Island by Simon K. Unsworth Three Fingers, One Thumb by Stephen Volk Afterward by Edith Wharton
Best Regards, Brian
