I'm talking about mainstream stuff here, though I know the lines can sometimes be blurry.
A Prayer For Owen Meany, John Irving Crazy Love, David Lozell Martin Praise the Human Season, Don Robertson Other Bells For Us To Ring, Robert Cormier Mother Land, Paul Theroux The Accidental Tourist, Anne Tyler Burmese Days, George Orwell Lonesome Dove, Larry McMurtry
I have little doubt that Lewis Shiner's Outside the Gates of Eden will make the list.

Excellent thread Mark.
A PRAYER FOR OWEN MEANY is on my list to read. I very much adore Martin's CRAZY LOVE. I still have MOTHER LAND (thanks Mark!); I should be able to get to it in another month or so. I've also read OTHER BELLS FOR US TO RING. good stuff
I just added the others to my "to read" list
I will construct a list of my own...let me think for a little bit first

I mainly read horror / suspense / classic weird stories now a days. I used to read a lot of SF back in the 90's, but few of those books have stayed with me over the years.
Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton First Blood by David Morrel (I enjoyed both movies, but the books are outstanding) Darwin's Radio by Greg Bear (one of the few 90's SF books that have stayed with me) Silence of the Lambs / Red Dragon by Thomas Harris (and you could make the argumentment that both also work as horror stories) The Bottoms by Joe Lansdale The Hot Zone by Richard Preston The Abominable by Dan Simmons Fever Kill by Tom Piccirilli Childhood's End by Arthur C. Clark

My favorite non-horror books are generally non-fiction: -- The Great Influenza by John M. Barry -- The Mythic Image by Joseph Campbell -- Forbidden Knowledge by Roger Shattuck -- Poltergeist! A Study in Destructive Haunting by Colin Wilson
I love books about diseases and medicine. Plagues, outbreaks, outdated surgery practices, medical oddities, strange deaths.

In the realm of nonfiction, I mostly read books about the arts. Some of my favorites are:
I Want My MTV: The Uncensored Story of the Music Video Revolution, by Craig Marks and Rob Tannenbaum
Once Around the Bloch, Robert Bloch
A Dream About Lightning Bugs, by Ben Folds
Astounding, by Alec Nevala-Lee
Joe Bob Goes to the Drive-In, by Joe Bob Briggs
Shock Value, by John Waters
Danse Macabre, Stephen King
Mad World: An Oral History of New Wave Artists and Songs That Defined the 1980s, by Lori Majewski and Jonathan Bernstein
The Mothers and Fathers Italian Association, Thomas F. Monteleone

Well, I mean, the best non-fiction book of all time is "The Authorized Al," so I guess I like books about musicians, too.

Deena, there's a new one out now called The Weird Accordion To Al! I don't have it yet, but I will. I will. Best of all, it is Yankovic-approved.

Have you ever read The Hot Zone by Richard Preston? It is a fictional account supposedly based on true events of a near ebola breakout in the US back in the early '80's. Richard is the brother of Douglas Preston of the Preston & Child writing duo. B

I haven't read that yet, but Richard Preston is a client of mine. He's awesome, and his book topics are fascinating. He's got 4 books in the Dark Biology series; the 4th came out this past fall. I definitely need to catch up on reading him! Did you know there was a TV series of THE HOT ZONE, starring Julianna Margulies?

I need to look the other books up. Also did not know about the TV series. I don't watch a lot of TV. Is it worth digging up. B
