I read The Outsider upon its publication. I ended up enjoying the book, but was also frustrated. The Outsider is absolutely brilliant in its first half. Then it degrades into a weary generic horror tale. I don't mind that the novel started as hardboiled suspense and changed to supernatural horror. I just wish it had been done with more inspiration.
I'm doing the audio now, and it is read by a real favorite: Will Patton. Again I am captivated by the situation and characters.
What did you guys think of The Outsider?

My opinion pretty much mirrors yours. One of the best first halves of a book I've read. Then... generic and tired after the midpoint.

I'm almost done with the audiobook. I actually really love the whole Mexican monster motif, and tying it in with a cheap south of the border superhero movie is an inspired plot device. The showdown in the hole is the real letdown.
