Deena and I watched this week and loved it! Really the only quibble we had was with the imperfect CGI of de-aging a couple of the actors, although it was certainly more effective than that time they removed Superman's mustache. I thought it was great to have a cast of non-white non-men running the show and passing the Bechdel Test in the process. Screw all those insecure babies out there who can't handle it.

We thoroughly enjoyed it, too.

I'm glad you guys liked it, but as I've said before, I'm not into superhero stuff. I suppose I've reached the grumpy old bastard stage, because most modern movies do not look appealing to me.

I’ve seen it twice. It holds up to the Marvel standard. Even if it is a mid tier Marvel movie.

Yeah, definitely not in the top tier

Why is it a mid-tier Marvel movie?

Well, for me, the top tier is really exclusive.
for me, it's Avengers, Cap2: Winter Soldier, and Logan (although I know it isn't MCU). I will add a fourth film as soon as another approaches the greatness of those three

Logan was okay, but Captain Marvel was more in the MCU canon and I thought done better.

better than Logan? Interesting.
So where do you rank Captain Marvel vs the other MCU films?

It's hard to beat Infinity War for its epic scope, mainly because it has benefited from all the pipe the earlier films laid, so that's probably at the top now for me. I also enjoyed Thor: Ragnarok a great deal; it was goofy as hell and just worked well. I would place Captain Marvel in the top three, especially since it broke a lot of ground.
Logan had some good character development, but we've seen that plot archetype many times before, that of the grizzled old warrior being called out for one last battle and dealing with his age (loss of identity, loss of strength, etc.) in the process.

Ah crap. Forgot about Infinity war. You're right. That one is in the top tier for sure. Just the separate Thanos fight scenes are worth the admission price. Also right about Thor Ragnarok. Definitely the best of the Thor films, no question.
But, I still can't put Captain Marvel amongst those films. I know it was an origin story, which will be naturally a bit slower, but even for an origin story I felt that the first two acts were abnormally boring. The third act is great though. I just think that flaw is too much to overlook. Still liked it a lot though

Posted this on FB after I saw it yesterday: "Just saw Captain Marvel with my three boys. Middle boy (who turned 14 today) got to pick the movie. I enjoyed it much more than the tedious Avengers movies. I also think it's so cool that a 14 year old boy had no hesitation about picking a movie about a kick-ass female lead. In fact, nothing about the subject ever came up. It probably helps that they see their mom kicking ass on a daily basis."
