I'm a few days late with this one, but Jan Michael was a really good actor who did some terrific roles. Many drive-in fans will cite The Mechanic, with the one and only Charles Bronson, and rightly so. There's also White Line Fever, Damnation Alley, Vigilante Force, Hit List. Lots of good, credible action movies. The one that comes straight to my mind is Big Wednesday, a movie that should have been a classic along the lines of American Graffiti. The movie never caught on with the audience it deserves. I call Big Wednesday a favorite. It's about surfing friends, but it is also about a lot more than that. Jan Michael Vincent is another example of the tragedy of substance abuse. It's always been an epidemic in Hollywood, but it occurs in every walk of life.

I meant to mention The World's Greatest Athlete. I loved it as a kid, and I even read the novelization.

What I thought was incredibly sad about this story was that it took a month from his death for it to come out. A modern reality star, we'd have TMZ on the doorstep trading in the misery in seconds, with the death certificates and gossip from gawkers... a month. A month...

It's terrible. Unworthy people famous for being famous. Vincent was a huge star in his day, and he not only had the looks, he had the charisma to back them up.
It's especially sad how prophetic his Big Wednesday role is. His character had a serious alcohol problem. Unfortunately I think Vincent's problems went far beyond drinking.
