I've been watching these lately. Man, what a great series. I have the set on DVD, and it's well-worth it, whether you've seen these before or want to give it a first-time try. Darren McGavin is at his best. Witty, clownish, bumbling, sarcastic, fearless, and warm all at once. Great chemistry between Kolchak and his editor Vinchenzo, who was always befuddled by his eccentric reporter and tried changing him, which failed every time. Certainly this was a who's-who for the times when it came to famous actors, THE NIGHT STALKER was a monster-of-the-week series, reliably shifting to sci-fi or outright horror, with retreads of classic monsters, or ones based on folklore. Great stuff, and the commonly used and proper phrase aptly applies; they don't make 'em like they used to.

I, too, have the DVDs and have been rewatching them recently. I just finished episode 9, "The Spanish Moss Murders." It is great stuff! If anyone is interested in the show and doesn't have the DVDs, it can be streamed for free (with ads) on NBC's website. Kolchak: The Night Stalker on NBC.comHunter

I have been reading the original Night Stalker novel to Clara. While it still has a lot of merit, the book doesn't quite hold up to my lofty memories of when I first read it at age twelve.
