Clara and I saw the Mr. Rogers movie today. Both of us absolutely adored the documentary about Mr. R., and we were excited to see this feature.
Tom Hanks is predictably wonderful as Fred Rogers. The movie has a weird, surrealistic structure, but it works extremely well. This isn't just a mawkish sentimental story. A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood deals with hard issues, and some scenes are difficult to watch. A lot of the writer character struck deep with me. Painfully so at times.
We both loved the movie and I think everyone should see it.
Before the feature we were treated to numerous trailers for grotesquely over-the-top, puerile movies coming up. It was so nice to follow them up with a story that deals with real emotions.

There was one preview that looked promising based on a beloved book from my youth, Call of the Wild. I loved that book and subsequently became a Jack London fan. Harrison Ford! How can it be bad. As the trailer progressed Buck became a CGI mugging caricature of a dog. Don’t think I will see it. I love that book too much. Perhaps I will read it again. It’s been a long time.

The trailer was hideous.
