I sometimes get so sick of horror fiction that I want to spit. I'll never stop reading it, but I need to step away now and then. Last night I started Palisades Park, by Alan Brennert. Brennert is known for his work in the TV industry, but he has written some acclaimed historical fiction, and he is also a Nebula-winner for science fiction. Palisades Park is a multi-generational epic about a family whose lives are inexorably tied to the legendary New Jersey attraction. Brennert also worked with Ellison on the 1980's Twilight Zone show.

Altered Carbon by Richard Morgan. It was the basis of the Netflix series, which was pretty good (if a little confusing, which is why I dug out the novel).

I just finished up with Palisades Park, which I absolutely loved. Next up, I think, is a re-read of Greg Kihn's Horror Show.

I'm slowly working my way through "Journey to the West," the classic Chinese novel about the Monkey King. It's fascinating to see how many of the stories have popped up in pop culture. The translation I have is easy to read and follow (but there are tons of scholarly notes from the translator!).
